German Student Visa in 2026: Documents, Online Application and Timeline

Non-EU students need a national visa for study purposes before travelling. Since 2025 most German missions take the application through the online Consular Services Portal, followed by an appointment for biometrics. You will need your admission letter, proof of finances (usually a blocked account with €11,904), health insurance and your academic documents. Plan two to three months from application to visa; processing commonly takes 4–12 weeks depending on the embassy.

Who needs a German student visa?

Citizens of EU/EEA countries and Switzerland do not need a visa. Citizens of a few countries (such as the USA, Canada, Australia, Japan or South Korea) can enter visa-free and apply for the residence permit in Germany. Everyone else — including students from India, Turkey, Pakistan, Nigeria, Bangladesh, Egypt and most of Latin America — must obtain the national student visa before travelling.

Which documents do you need?

  • Valid passport and biometric photos
  • Completed application on the Consular Services Portal
  • Admission letter from a German university (or conditional admission / Studienkolleg confirmation)
  • Proof of financial resources, usually a blocked account confirmation for €11,904
  • Proof of health insurance — see health insurance
  • School and university certificates, transcripts and their translations
  • Language certificates (English or German, as your programme requires)
  • APS certificate if you are from India, China or Vietnam — see uni-assist and APS
  • CV and, at some embassies, a motivation letter

Every embassy publishes its own checklist. Download the one for your country from the embassy website and follow it exactly — a missing copy is the most common reason for a second appointment.

How do you apply, step by step?

  1. Receive your admission and note the semester start date.
  2. Open the blocked account and arrange health insurance — both confirmations go into the application.
  3. Create an account on the Consular Services Portal (digital.diplo.de) and upload your documents.
  4. Book the appointment the portal or embassy assigns for identity checks and fingerprints.
  5. Pay the €75 fee (some embassies charge the equivalent in local currency).
  6. Wait for the decision — usually 4–12 weeks, longer in peak season.

The online portal is available at most German missions, but not yet everywhere. If your embassy still uses paper applications, its website will say so.

How long does it take, and when should you start?

StepTypical time
APS certificate (India, China, Vietnam)4–8 weeks, sometimes longer
University application and admission1–3 months
Blocked account confirmationa few days after the money arrives
Visa appointment waitdays to several months, by country
Visa processingabout 4–12 weeks

For a winter semester starting in October, most students should apply for the visa no later than June or July. In countries with long appointment queues, book as soon as your admission arrives.

What if you do not have admission yet?

If you are still waiting for a decision, a university application visa lets you come to Germany to complete the application process. It requires a higher monthly proof of funds than the student visa and is converted into a residence permit for study once you are admitted. Ask your embassy whether it is available to you.

What do you do after arriving in Germany?

  1. Register your address (Anmeldung) at the citizens’ office, usually within 14 days.
  2. Activate your blocked account and open a German current account.
  3. Enrol at the university with your health insurance confirmation.
  4. Apply for the residence permit at the local immigration office before your visa expires — the entry visa is typically valid for three to six months.
